THE CASE: POSTCARD MAILERS JOB
OPPORTUNITY
OPENING STATEMENT: "I
came across a site that is looking for postcard mailers at
www.[URL removed]. Is this real or a rip-off?"
THE CLAIM:
- Put mailing labels and stamps on
postcards, drop them in the mail, and earn up to $20,000 a
month.
THE FINDINGS:
(Based
on exploration of the site, experience, and research.)
- There are machines that label
and
stamp postcards faster than any human being can, and at a fraction of
the cost. Why pay someone to do it?
- The site states that mailers can make up
to $20,000 per month mailing postcards. Claims of extraordinary
earnings are often used as the "bait" on the hooks of scammers, or
those
who are trying to build their "downline" (worker bee) pool.
- There is a small fee
(less than $5) for an "application/order" form. The inclusion of an
"order form" leads us
to believe that, once you've paid the initial fee, you will be told you
must
now purchase their postcards in order to get started. (Hidden
additional costs.)
- While the job ad states that the company
is seeking "postcard mailers," the site later reveals that the actual
position is for "Promoters." Indications are that the Promoter must
generate sales from the postcards s/he has sent in order to receive any
payment. This is likely a commission-only arrangement, in which the
Promoter must find his or her own prospective buyers (friends, family,
neighbors) OR purchase a mailing list from the company (another
additional cost).
THE
VERDICT:
With
the facts at hand, we do not think this is a scam in the strictest
sense of the word. However, we do think it would be difficult
for
individuals without extraordinary selling skills to make meaningful
revenues under this arrangement. In the end, you might
well feel that it was a waste of your time, money and energy.
GUILTY, by reason of insanity of
claims made!
