Surge in Moms Turning to Phone Sex Jobs
By Christine Durst & Michael Haaren, Dallas Morning News / Creators Syndicate Columnists
Dec. 22, 2011
When Good Morning America interviewed Chris recently about moms working from home as phone sex actresses (the segment is online here),
a tidal wave of visits swamped our RatRaceRebellion.com server. We were
reporting on the surge in interest we ourselves had seen in phone sex
jobs. The GMA segment triggered an even great surge.
It’s not hard to understand why. The thousands of emails we
received tell the story. Many are heartbreaking. The economy has been
far more devastating than officials want to admit.
Here is just a sampling of what viewers shared.
- I'm a
single stay-at-home mother to a 16 month old. I'm 19 years of age. I've
never been struggling so bad in my life. Next step, I'm going to a
homeless shelter with my child. I'm on welfare and my son didn't get a
Christmas present from mommy this year. I feel like a horrible mother.
- I
have been unemployed for over 2 years, had a few part-time jobs here
and there but not enough income to help my family keep up with mounting
overdue bills and rent.
- I am
a single mother of a five year old and have been actively seeking
employment for months, to no avail. I am still unemployed and I am in
desperate need of steady income.
THE PHONE SEX SECTOR
Not all the interest in phone sex jobs comes from desperation, of
course. Many phone sex operators, or PSOs, as they’re known,
report that they are happy in their jobs. They entered the field out of
personal interest, curiosity or other reasons.
Many PSOs simply consider themselves actresses. Others see themselves
as informal therapists, meeting a critical social need. Some say that
their calls often don’t even involve sex, but rather
companionship and understanding.
Phone sex operators earn an average of roughly $15 an hour, though they
can earn much more as freelance professionals, running their own
businesses. Some PSOs report earning as much as $1,000 per day or more.
PSOs who specialize in fetishes or other interests charge as much as
$50 per minute. They may also specialize in certain groups of clients,
such as businesspeople on the road.
Of course, as with any type of job, phone sex work is not for everyone.
PSOs must be comfortable acting various roles and listening to a wide
variety of comments, and must have a quiet place to talk. Children, if
any, mustn’t be present, needless to say. And significant others
must be part of the decision, too.
