A Note from the Editor
green line

Michael Haaren, Editor Dear Reader,

This week’s issue brings our customary 20 hand-screened jobs and projects, but is a bit more svelte than usual, as Chris and I have seen a significant rise in our workload. (More on that later, as we think you’ll find one project especially interesting.)

Since we try to follow our own work/life balance advice, we may reduce the Bulletin’s text load in future issues. We’ll continue to publish jobs each week, but may go (for a time) to a jobs-plus-commentary issue every other week.

Given the pinches and pains of the recession, we’re also adding more fresh freebies at RatRaceRebellion.com, on our Freebies & Cheapies page.

To sample the latest, see http://www.ratracerebellion.com/freebies.htm.

Enjoy, Good Luck, and Be Well.

Mike

P.S. - Until next week’s issue, you’ll find more screened job leads every day at Rat Race Rebellion.com, at http://www.ratracerebellion.com/job_postings.htm . The jobs listed in this Bulletin are withheld from the website for a full week, to give readers an edge.

DEVELOPMENTS OF NOTE, WITH A DASH OF COMMENT:

HILTON WANTS TO ADD 1,000 AT-HOME AGENTS BY END OF 2009
Hilton says it’s been very happy with its home-based agent model, and expects to expand the 18-month-old program from 900 to 1900 agents by the end of 2009.

For more, see http://www.hotelinteractive.com/article.aspx?articleid=12276.

“RISE OF THE AT-HOME CALL CENTER AGENT”
Whatever job you have in mind, it always helps to have a good grasp of the job type and the industry. For a quick summary of the development of the home-based call center agent, see this recent piece by the CEO of virtual call center Alpine Access: http://tinyurl.com/68fcsz.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES WANT TO OFFER BACHELOR’S – MORE E-TEACHING JOBS?
In the US, community colleges have been “muscling in” on the turf of conventional four-year schools for years. Now, in the state of Washington, they want to offer four-year degrees.

Could this be the start of a national trend? (I wouldn’t be surprised.) Further, since many community colleges have embraced online learning, this may spell a (gradual) rise in online teaching jobs.

For more, see http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/390400_colleges03.html?source=mypi.

THE GOOD NEWS IS, GAS IS GOING TO A DOLLAR A GALLON
The bad news is, nobody’s got a dollar.

IN INDIA, HOME-BASED KNOWLEDGE WORKERS “COULD GO TO 30%-40% IN 5-10 YEARS”
In India, king of business process and “knowledge process” outsourcing, there’s talk of 30%-40% of workers becoming home-based in the next decade.

If India can resolve infrastructure issues and reduce red tape, this will accelerate the trend. Global warming concerns may do so as well. For green folks, of particular concern is the prospective carbon footprint of India’s rising middle class….

For more, see http://tinyurl.com/6efnef.

FRUGAL AND SIMPLE LIVING
Here’s this week’s freebalicities, for tight times.

If you see something you like, be sure to grab it fast, as free stuff goes quickly on the Web. (Fine print: I’m afraid we have no control over supplies, or when the vendors decide to halt their offers or fulfillment. US-only unless otherwise indicated.)

Enjoy!

Screened Job Leads

*Editor’s Note: All positions are screened, but we can’t, of course, “guarantee” the legitimacy of any hirer or lead, so please do your own ‘due diligence’ as well! All positions are paid unless otherwise noted. The amount of compensation is included in the summary when given in the underlying lead.

Also, please note that on occasion the hirer will decide to change the description or the availability of the job or project shortly AFTER the summary is published here. (Unfortunately, we have no control over this.) Therefore, be sure to read the underlying ad carefully, and apply promptly for any job that interests you.

As a subscriber to the Rat Race Rebellion Weekly Bulletin (the Bulletin) you understand and agree to comply with the following conditions:
  • Staffcentrix, LLC makes no guarantees related to the quantity and quality of responses from prospective employers to client applications
  • Any information and services provided by Staffcentrix, LLC may be used only for lawful purposes.
  • Staffcentrix, LLC is not responsible for the content of employer listings or the content of hyperlinks within an employer's posting.
  • As covered more thoroughly below under “Scams,” we make every reasonable effort to screen employer leads and offer only legitimate postings in the Bulletin. Staffcentrix, LLC cannot be responsible for the outcome of negotiations between employers and the users of the Bulletin.
Scams
As noted, while listings contained in the Bulletin have been screened by our staff, and we believe in good faith that all listings are legitimate, Staffcentrix, LLC cannot guarantee the legitimacy of all listings, and we can make no representations or accept any responsibility regarding prospective employers themselves. Inevitably, with the number of “help wanted” ads that are screened for the Bulletin, and the “camouflage” that inappropriate opportunities may sometimes wear, an illegitimate or inappropriate item will occasionally “slip below our radar” and make its way into the Bulletin. Should you encounter any lead that appears to be a scam, please report it to us immediately. Such items may include:
  • Positions that were posted as "work at home" that are not;
  • Posts that turn out to be multi-level marketing (MLM) operations or "get rich quick" schemes
  • Any "employer" who asks for money before releasing more details about the job
We have a zero tolerance policy regarding such "employers" and, when they are reported, we will make certain that no further posts from these parties are allowed into the Bulletin.
