~*~*~ THE RAT RACE REBELLION TELEWORK BULLETIN ~*~*~ Dear Reader, A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Today’s Bulletin arrives a day later than usual, as I took a short break to spend some time with my daughter, Jazz, who just got back from three weeks with her extended family in Spain. We’ll be on vacation next week -- we try to follow our own “de-Rat Race Your Life” advice -- so look for us again the week of August 25. Hope you enjoy today’s fare, and are finding some relaxation time of your own. U.S. VIRTUAL CALL CENTER ARISE SEEKS 4,000 AGENTS Arise Virtual Solutions announced a recruiting drive this week for 4,000 home-based agents by the end of 2008. According to its press release, “Arise seeks talent from a variety of groups that may benefit from a flexible, independent home-based work model, including stay-at-home moms, military spouses, retirees, college students and the disabled, among others.” For details, see lead no. 1, below. U.S. VIRTUAL CALL CENTER CONVERGYS SEEKS HOME-BASED AGENTS Convergys contacted us this week with a hiring announcement for agents in 20 states. “Qualify for competitive hourly pay plus benefits (such as: paid training, medical and dental coverage, 401k, tuition reimbursement, etc.).” As with West and some other call centers, Convergys agents are employees rather than independent contractors. For details, see lead no. 3 below. CHRYSLER TO OFFER IN-CAR INTERNET We have a theory here (not hard to concoct) that the car of the future will house a mini-workstation. (Telework may be sexy, but it’s not so sexy that it can definitively defeat The Car and its Allies. As a part of that trend, Chrysler is offering Internet connectivity beginning August 25. According to RadioInk Convergence, “The Mopar, made by Autonet Mobile, works with Chrysler Uconnect Web's EVDO cellular hookup, which converts to WiFi so several passengers can use it at once. There is no technical reason the driver can't use it, too, but one hopes (probably in vain) that most people have better sense.” Auto-Internet also means Internet radio, of course, which is why the radio industry is tracking the trend. This also means that children can soon log onto Webkinz -- or watch movies downloaded from the Net (a service which Netflix already provides) -- from their car seats. Look out Future, here we come! (For more on the Chrysler news, see http://www.radioink.com/cw/article.asp?id=840465&spid=25999.) “VIRTUAL PARALEGAL” AN OPTION, BUT NEEDS MORE MEDIA EXPOSURE As a former attorney, I can attest that a virtual paralegal would have made my job much easier, particularly on weekends, when many paralegals, understandably, were reluctant to make the trek into the firm. Virtual paralegals have been around for several years, but the option struggles with a lack of media exposure. Today’s article at Law.com -- “Virtual Paralegals Manage Cases at a Distance” -- was a pleasant surprise. Laurie Mapp, a Canadian virtual paralegal quoted in the article, says her workflow includes pleadings and motions, doing research, proofing briefs, and similar assignments. Paywise, according to the article, “virtual paralegals generally charge [US]$15 to $20 an hour for basic data input, and more complex matters start in the neighborhood of $30 an hour.” The legal profession is not known for workforce innovation (an understatement), but small firms and solo practitioners -- being more entrepreneurial than the larger firms -- are probably the best bet for virtual support. For more, see the article at http://tinyurl.com/5wshd7 . For an in-depth look at virtual work arrangements in the legal profession, see US attorney Grant Griffiths’ “Home Office Warrior” blog and the links there, at http://gdgrifflaw.typepad.com/home_office_lawyer/. (Griffiths, whom we interviewed here in our Sept. 27, 2007, issue, himself uses a virtual paralegal.) CONSIDERING FREELANCING? “IMAGE” IS ALL TILL YOU CAN SHOW ‘EM THE REST Continuing in our periodic excerpts from “The 2-Second Commute,” our how-to book for new and aspiring Virtual Assistants and other freelancers, this segment from our chapter on marketing focuses on how to find the “image” that fits you best. ---- Image is Everything (Until You Have a Chance to Show Them the Rest) You can tell prospects that you're “wonderful” and “highly effective” and that your work is the best thing north of the South Pole, but the bottom line is you’re asking a stranger to enter into a relationship with you based on appearances -- image is all. But before you display this finished canvas of “You, Virtual Assistant,” what will you paint on it? Which of your characteristics do you most want prospects to see? Honesty and professionalism? Efficiency and sophistication? Speed and cost-effectiveness? A professional palette has many colors. You’ll need to choose the colors that suit you best, and combine them in the optimal manner on your “canvas” (your web site, stationery, brochures, business cards, and so forth). And while we’re on the subject of image, “borrowing” someone else's (unless you’re in the forgery business), rarely works. The point is not only to land the client, but also to establish a long-term relationship with them, a relationship based on trust. Apart from the question of honesty and stress, sooner or later the image you’ve “borrowed” and the truth of who you are will collide, because you are unique. The moral? Choose an image that reflects the “unique you.” This image must also “capture and stimulate.” Think for a moment about the products you see on the shelves of your local grocery store, the commercials on TV, billboards on highways, ads you see in print. Each is designed to capture the attention of the target audience and stimulate a purchase. And again, there are many colors on the palette. For example, General Mills wanted their vitamin-packed Wheaties® cereal to be as attractive to kids as it is to moms, but understood that children find vitamins neither interesting nor desirable. So, in the mid-1930’s they began to put images of famous athletes and the slogan “The Breakfast of Champions” on the Wheaties® boxes. Decades later the strategy is still working, so well in fact that it’s not unusual to hear people say things like, “Big game today… better eat your Wheaties®!” Though you won’t actually be “sitting on a shelf” as grocery products do, you will be one VA among many, and it’s important to stand out. To help loosen up the creative marketing muscles, we have students in our training sessions take part in the following “image visualization” and brainstorming exercise. Imagine we’ve just handed you a large white “cereal box” and instructed you to create a VA package for you and your business. The design should project your image and hold a high level of appeal for your target audience. -- What do you envision on the front of the box, showcasing you to consumers as they walk down the aisle? (This is the composite that grabs the prospect’s attention and makes him want to pick up the box and read the side panel.) -- Assuming you’ve succeeded in step one, what will he read among the “ingredients” on your side panel? For example: *Ingredients: Effectiveness, Expertise, Competency, Proficiency, Commitment, Focus, Dependability, Value, Capability, Productivity, Trustworthiness, Reliability, Experience, Sense of Humor, Professionalism, Dedication. -- And let’s not forget the back panel, often used to showcase special offers, or details about the “prize inside.” What “little extras” do you have to offer your clients? *First two hours free! *Discounts offered for retainer clients! *Canadian VA means your US dollar goes farther! *One hour free for every 15 hours paid! *Secret decoder ring! (Kidding, but you get the point. Little extras can be “tie-breakers” when it comes down to you and the other VA finalists.) Now you should have a better idea of the business image you’d like project to your prospective clients, and maintain for them when they’ve signed up with you. Remember, at all points in the relationship, from first perception to goodbye, your performance should always be true to your image. ---------------- From “The 2-Second Commute,” by Christine Durst and Michael Haaren, published by Career Press, on Amazon at http://tinyurl.com/ysx2me . U.S. VIRTUAL CALL CENTER VIPDESK SEEKS VIRGINIA AND NEW YORK AGENTS VIPdesk announced more recruiting drives for agents this week -- focused on Virginia and New York residents -- adding to others we’ve reported on here over the past few weeks. As with Arise, LiveOps, and other call centers, VIPdesk’s agents (“Brand Ambassadors”) are independent contractors rather than employees. Agents are also required to pass credit and background checks. For the Va. announcement, see http://tinyurl.com/5b52n8 . For NY, see http://tinyurl.com/6kr23s. FROM THE R3 MAILBAG -- QUESTIONS ABOUT WORKING FROM HOME, AND OTHER RAT RACE TOPICS DEAR R3: I see a lot of ads on the Internet for freelance writers. I like to write, but I don’t really have a style, and I often feel like I’m just groping for the right words. How can I improve my writing? R3: Like playing the piano or drawing well, writing takes practice. Fortunately, developing a journalistic style -- where clarity, organization and simplicity are often valued most -- is easier than developing a unique style in fiction, which can often take years of soul-searching labor. Set yourself the goal of writing every day about topics that interest you. Ask trusted readers to comment on your work. (If you post your work online, of course, you may receive comments from all kinds of readers, so take stylistic feedback with a grain of salt.) You’ll also need something to show prospective hirers -- which these days are primarily online -- so build a portfolio of your best work. Starting a blog (via such platforms as Helium.com, Blogger.com, TypePad.com, WordPress.com, etc.) or contributing articles to websites (with or without pay) can keep your developmental and networking momentum going, as will sticking to subjects you care about. Get to know editors and others who write the checks (and / or monetize your own blog with Google AdSense or other advertising options), and you’re on your way. -- For more on writing clearly, see “The Elements of Style,” by Strunk and White. (This is the conventional guidebook, which advocates compression and economy in writing. If you want to see the English language in marvelous variety from a contemporary American writer, sample Gore Vidal’s essays.) -- For more on how AdSense works, see https://www.google.com/adsense. -- For more on making money by blogging, see our experts The Blog Squad at http://www.ratracerebellion.com/EC_Blogger.htm, and Darren Rowse’s tips at http://www.problogger.net/ .
