~*~*~ THE RAT RACE REBELLION TELEWORK BULLETIN ~*~*~ Dear Reader, A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR This week, we bring you a fresh recruiting announcement from virtual call center VIPdesk; more news on the growth of online public-school teaching in the US; hiring trends in virtual world Second Life; a cool summer promotion from our favorite blogging site, Helium; our pick for a home-based craft-assembly company; and much more! Twenty hand-picked jobs and projects fill out the dance card, with our heartfelt wish for your every success. Enjoy, and Be Well. VIPDESK SEEKS HOME IMPROVEMENT-SAVVY CALL CENTER AGENTS (“CERTIFICATION TRAINING STARTS AUG. 4”) US-based virtual call center and concierge services firm VIPdesk announced another recruiting drive for agents this week. Per its press release, the company “has a significant number of opportunities for home-based Brand Ambassadors to support a new client, a national home referral services company that matches homeowners with pre-screened home improvement contractors.” For details, see lead no. 1, below. (To sample ongoing conversations among people who are applying to work, are working, or have worked for VIPdesk, LiveOps, and other firms, check out sites like www.wahm.com and www.workplacelikehome.com. Bear in mind of course that some “sour grapes” or competitive biases may sometimes crop up, just as they would in a real-world gathering. For our own screened list of 75+ companies that hire home-based agents, with hourly wages, geographical restrictions, and other details, see http://www.ratracerebellion.com/CS_Comparison.html .) A NOTE ON EMPLOYER JOB-AD DESCRIPTIONS As we mention in our “boilerplate” below (just before the job summaries), employers and publishers will occasionally change the description of a job after we publish a summary here. (Alas, we have no control over this.) It doesn’t happen often, but it occurred last week with our lead no. 20. When we went to press, the position involved “editors and proofreaders,” and we summarized the accompanying description. After the Bulletin had gone out, the entire page was changed to “Experienced Writers” -- but the hyperlink (URL) remained the same. (This may have confused some readers who clicked on the link, so I wanted to clarify here.) If you’re the inquisitive type, like us, you can see the original job -- our “lead no. 20” -- in Google’s cache, at http://tinyurl.com/5hakbr . The job that suddenly replaced it is at http://www.journalismjobs.com/Job_Listing.cfm?JobID=954737 . HELIUM HOSTS “SUMMER REWARD-ATHON” Helium, which Chris and I recommend for people who would like a chance to earn money blogging or by selling freelance articles (we have an affiliate relationship with them), is offering bonus payments for articles on selected topics (there are hundreds listed, with more to come) through Sept. 22. To learn more about how Helium works, go to http://tinyurl.com/6ny2z8 . You’ll find more on the Summer Reward-athon on Helium’s home page. RAT RACE, JUNIOR DIVISION -- ALONG WITH LESSONS IN MANDARIN AND MOZART, ADD PARENTAL FREAKOUTS AT SLEEPAWAY CAMPS. “PARENT LIAISONS” A GROWING TREND… Parents sending their kids to pricey “sleepaway” camps here in the US are having an increasingly tough time letting go, it seems. Many bombard the camps with “helicopter” calls. (“My child sounded uncomfortable when we talked a few minutes ago…” “My son didn’t get the bunk placement he wanted. We need to change that.” “Which of my daughter’s four varieties of vitamins have run out?”) Others tell their children to lie about having a cell phone, or surreptitiously provide them two cell phones in case one is found out. (One camp consultant -- they have consultants now -- calls this “fading parental morality.”) So says a recent piece in the NY Times, in any case, adding that most high-end camps in the Northeast now have full-time “parent liaisons,” to handle the helicopters. It begs a few questions. Sure, we miss our kids when they’re at camp, but do we really need to stress them out this way? And why are we sending them to camp in the first place? Moreover, don’t they need a break from their “Rat Race” (and us), too? What are we teaching them when we tell them to lie? And so on… What’s Wrong with Plain Old 4-H Camp? Helicopter camps are a far cry from my own experience at “sleepaway” camp. (By the way, isn’t that phrase redundant? How is it a camp if you don’t stay overnight? “I went to Camp Burger King today! We ate and played there!”) In rural Virginia, where I grew up, some of us lucky ones got to go to 4-H Camp. (The tenant farmer -- a polite term for sharecropper -- kids almost never got to go.) I went once, for a week, and loved it. We slept in rustic cabins, with a “counselor” there (skinny, easygoing teenagers), and ate meals together in a big outdoor shelter (a “pavilion,” surely, now). It was woodsy, remote, unadorned, and the height of adventure. I cherish the memory, and recall the experience vividly. No phone calls or letters (I think we sent one post card), no “helicoptering.” (Parents had better things to do.) Sure, we missed mom and dad -- we missed our dogs, pigs, rabbits, and cows, too -- but those feelings paled next to the exhilarating rush of independence and adventure and freedom that came with being “far away and on our own.” That summer changed us. Certainly, there were painful or awkward moments (Are we really supposed to pass our childhood days with a fixed grin on our face?), but overall it lifted and strengthened us, helped us discover and understand ourselves, and created and cemented friendships, too. Sometimes, I wonder if the helicopter parents don’t risk overdosing their children with a kind of “emotional Prozac,” blanketing them in a suffocating, numbing “concern” -- a concern that seems to mask something else. Are they insecure about their relationship with their children? (If so, why?) Do their own lives need more substance? If they interacted more with their kids, would they be as obsessive? Don’t they know their children well enough to trust them to navigate even the circumscribed experiences of camp? I wonder what the children would say about it -- if anyone ever took the trouble to ask them (or listen). One also wonders how these kids will fare when they suddenly meet the “total freedom” of college, or life in an apartment, on their own. BUSINESS WEEK, AND TELEWORK’S “IPO” “To Expand Your Business, Go Home,” a recent Business Week article advised. A few years ago, it would have been rare indeed to see a headline like that in a “blue chip” business magazine. It’s a sign of the times, I think, that we saw it last week. (The Business Week piece reports on OrganizedWisdom.com, a health-resources website we covered here on Jan. 16, 2008.) It’s critical to the evolution of telework that “established” publications like Business Week, Fortune, and the Wall Street Journal give insightful coverage to the trend, since so many larger employers and their managers -- as well as sundry policymakers, advisers, politicians, etc. -- take cues from their perspectives. As often happens in business, the innovation of virtual work was propagated in microenterprise, where iconoclastic thinking and bold moves are often the only way to survive, and zig-zag improvisation is a standard leadership trait. But trends are like organisms, and this one’s needs are evolving… Like a growing start-up, when the time has come for more conventional, process-oriented management to be brought in to replace the entrepreneurial founders and take the company to its IPO, telework now needs to be adopted and “managed” by the forces that dominate and define working life day-to-day. (Think Fortune 100 and leviathan governmental agencies, for example.) That arena is telework’s “capital market,” where its IPO has to be bought, and made part of the common portfolio. In other words, we’ve discovered the printing press, now it’s time to print some books. The BW article is at http://tinyurl.com/5npg32 . CALGARY SEEKS TO BOOST TELEWORK ACROSS REGION The city of Calgary is seeking CAN $800,000 through Transport Canada to promote telework in the city and region, the Calgary Herald reported this week. “In the past six to eight months, Calgary Economic Development has focused on telework as a priority project because it feels the time is right to explore how the city works and the opportunities to create better working environments, said Bruce Graham, president and CEO of Calgary Economic Development.” We wish them every success in the initiative. TRY WORKINMYROOM.COM Shameless plug time -- Chris’ daughter, Laura, a hardworking honors senior in high school, has put up a website with screened virtual jobs and projects for teens and college students, at http://www.workinmyroom.com . ONLINE PUBLIC-SCHOOL TEACHING GROWING IN U.S., UP 60% IN ONE YEAR Enrollment in public-school online courses rose 60% from 2002-2003 to 2004-2005, the Washington Post reported recently, with total students topping the half-million mark. Competition is intense among teachers for the online slots, as one might guess. “In Fairfax [Virginia], where about 40 online teachers earn $9,000 a course, there are four openings a year, said Mike Kowalski, the school system's online program administrator.” There’s a lot of interest, he adds. For teachers new to online teaching, it’s not all a bed of roses, the piece points out. They have to contend with such factors as “awkward or confusing lines of communication with their pupils,” and assessing students without seeing their facial expressions. Experts predict continued growth in online teaching, however, and advances in videoconferencing (slow, but sure) will go far to resolving the “facial expressions” issue. (No one contends, of course, that remote education and face-to-face teaching will ever be interchangeable. Besides, how can you use a birch switch virtually?) If you’re interested in an online teaching career, Chris and I recommend “Make Money Teaching Online,” by Danielle Babb and Jim Mirabella. It’s available at Amazon, at http://tinyurl.com/5kbzqa . For the Washington Post article, see http://tinyurl.com/6yzblh . “CORN FOR CARS” A MAJOR FACTOR IN GULF OF MEXICO’S GROWING DEAD ZONE A dead zone the size of Massachusetts is growing rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico, experts say, fed largely by agricultural chemicals from increased corn production for ethanol. (Flooding hasn’t helped.) Memo to governments: The only “dead zone” created by home-based work is the empty cube that used to have a half-dead commuter in it. HOME-BASED AND BRICK-AND-MORTAR JOBS IN VIRTUAL WORLDS -- MANPOWER MARKS FIRST YEAR IN SECOND LIFE, RANDSTAD PROMOTES JOBS WITHIN SL Staffing firms like Manpower and Netherlands-based Randstad have been busy in the virtual world Second Life, recruiting job applicants from the avatars there. Randstad has also been helping spread the word that people can actually work for businesses within SL itself, logging in from anywhere with Internet access. An interesting 2007 video from Randstad highlighted a few SL-based jobs that paid in Linden Dollars (the SL currency, which can be converted into US dollars), such as Guides and Store Managers. A job as a Hostess with a bank in SL was paid in Euros. The video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5xF43POYv8 . At its website, Randstad mentions an SL-based job with a Dutch law firm and two positions at a bank, though it’s not clear whether the page is current. For details, see http://tinyurl.com/6pn2ld . If you’re already an SL resident, Randstad gives its address as http://slurl.com/secondlife/randstad/50/100/50 . We’ll be digging deeper into the home-based job scene at SL (we first reported on it in our issue of December 8, 2005, and have periodically carried related leads since) and sharing the news here, so stay tuned! HOMESHORING (VIRTUAL CALL CENTER AGENTS) AGAIN PREDICTED TO INCREASE Home-based call center agents will increase, more experts say, as gas prices and worsening traffic work their mojo. The latest expert to weigh in -- Anthony Mitchell, an ECT News Network columnist -- gives the future an interesting twist, however, as he predicts homeshoring growth internationally -- not just in the US. It certainly makes sense conceptually. (We’ve been blowing the same horn for awhile now.) Gas and traffic woes are international, and people everywhere would like to work from home, at least part of the time. Moreover, virtual call centers should be able to offer better pricing and service (virtual agents have higher morale and loyalty) than their brick-box competitors. Just add managerial understanding and the communications infrastructure (both more advanced in some places than others, of course), and you’ve got the engines for the rocket. (Countries generally -- including the US -- will also come under increasing pressure to reduce vehicle emissions, and homeshoring is one of the simpler puzzle pieces.) For Anthony Mitchell’s predictions, see http://tinyurl.com/6az5wj . FUN WAYS TO ANNOY PEOPLE Chris and I are always yammering on about how we all need to care more about each other, so just to put some salt in the pea soup, how about some fun ways to annoy people? (One of the hallmarks of any Rat Race is annoyance, so for us this is actually job preservation.) (Adapted from Bored.com, which has many more. Great domain name, guys.) -- If you’re in an elevator, call the psychic hot line and ask them pointedly to tell you what floor you’re on. While you’re waiting for an answer, turn to fellow passengers with a triumphant look. -- When standing in line for a ride at an amusement park, leave wide gaps between yourself and the people in front of you. Talk on your cell phone, and peer up at the sky. -- When ordering food at a drive-through window, specify loudly that the order is “to go.” -- When on a date, hold a debate and earnestly take both sides. Then ask your date who won. FROM THE R3 MAILBAG -- QUESTIONS ABOUT WORKING FROM HOME, AND OTHER RAT RACE TOPICS DEAR R3: I am interested in home craft assembly, but so many of the offers seem to be scams. Can you recommend anybody? R3: You’re right to be cautious, as this niche is quite “scammy.” New England Crafters, at http://www.magicalgift.com/ , is one of the very few companies that we recommend. Keep in mind as you explore this field that you’ll normally have to pay up front for materials (legitimate companies would go out of business if they had to assume the risk of providing materials “on spec”), and that companies, of course, can’t buy back products that don’t meet their specifications. PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD If we’ve helped you, can you help us? Our Research Team, RatRaceRebellion.com, and this Bulletin are advertiser-supported, so please help us spread the word!
