~*~*~ THE RAT RACE REBELLION TELEWORK BULLETIN ~*~*~ Dear Reader, A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Today’s issue comes a day later than normal, as I took some time with my eight-year-old daughter, Jazz, this week, before she left for Spain today for a three-week visit with family. Getting back in harness, we have a comprehensive article on “having fun and making some extra dollars online,” courtesy of Chris; news on call center hiring in Kentucky; telework news from Thailand, Japan and Singapore; and a good deal more -- including a nice bouquet of freebies and one score jobs and projects, lovingly hand-picked. Enjoy, good luck, and be well! CALL CENTER ALPINE ACCESS SEEKS 100+ HOME-BASED AGENTS IN KENTUCKY Alpine Access, a US-based call center that employs approximately 7,500 home-based agents, recently announced that it’s hiring agents in Louisville, Kentucky, and surrounding areas. "With an economy that is as diverse as its geography, Kentucky and its residents are perfectly matched to meet the needs of our clients. We eagerly anticipate increasing our candidate pool with Kentucky applications," said CEO Christopher Carrington. According to the company’s press release, “[i]deal candidates… have strong educational backgrounds, a work history that includes previous customer service related responsibilities and good online computer skills.” Alpine Access pays approximately $9.00 per hour, and hires agents as employees rather than independent contractors. Regarding benefits, the company’s FAQ page says: “After three months of service, working an average of 20 hours per week with Alpine Access, you will be eligible for our voluntary benefit program that leverages our large number of employees to get great rates on medical, dental and vision insurance for you and your family. For qualified employees, we also offer a matching 401(k) plan.” The company’s clients include Office Depot, J. Crew, and the IRS. FUN WAYS TO MAKE EXTRA CASH ONLINE By Christine Durst Here are some unique and interesting ways to make some extra money “here and there.” You’re not likely to get rich with any one of them, but they can add a few more dollars to your income! (Many of these can be found through our 700+ links to periodic hirers of home-based workers at RatRaceRebellion.com, but I thought it might be fun and handy to group the lighthearted ones together.) Create and Sell Music Mixes! Love music and have a great ear for mixes? Mixaloo is a Web-based music sharing site that allows users to create free digital mix tapes and distribute them across the Internet on social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Blogger, directly earning half the profit from each mix sold. You can start making money by sharing and selling your one-of-a-kind music mixes at www.Mixaloo.com. $ = Mixaloo is offering to split the profit from each sale 50-50 with mixtape creators. The company estimates that profits are 20-40 cents per track on average, so split that in half to get your per-track profit rate. A purchase of a full mix might pay $1.30 and $2.60 for each sale made. In addition to earning money that is paid out each month, you will collect one point for every track sold. These points can be redeemed at a Mixaloo merchandise store that offers items such as t-shirts, speaker sets, and even cars. ~*~ “Be Your own Judge Judy” -- Online Jurors If you love court TV, you might enjoy making money as an online juror. You’ll review interesting legal cases from the comfort of your home, provide feedback through an online questionnaire, and be paid well for your time. Learn more at: www.juryvoice.com www.onlineverdict.com www.researchparticipants.com/Default.aspx?tabid=57 $ = It typically takes 20-60 minutes to review a case, and payments range from $10-$60 per case. ~*~ Doodling for Dollars Create original works of art and set up an online store for free! There was a time when selling your artwork on anything -- tees, mugs, calendars -- meant investing in inventory and setting up a storefront or website. Now, thanks to sites like those noted below, you can create and upload your art and sell it one piece at a time. Print to order! No cost to set up, no inventory to purchase, and no website expenses! These sites stock the merchandise, provide you with a site, take the payments, fill the orders, and handle any returns. You set the prices and collect the checks. Simply create your images and upload them to the site. Select the items you want to offer to your customers, set your price, and go! Resources: www.Zazzle.com www.CafePress.com $ = Earnings depend on how you set your profit margins and the quantity sold. ~*~ Telephone Psychic "I see a tall dark stranger... " If you have an uncanny "sixth sense" about people, or enjoy other unusual gifts, working as a telephone psychic (depending on your religious or spiritual views, of course) might be a great way to make some money from home. Most phone psychics find success through positive word of mouth from satisfied customers, so a warm and caring attitude will go a long way toward building your client base. You can find this kind of work at: http://www.psychiclight.com/telephone-psychic.php http://www.psychicsneeded.com/jobs.htm $ = Phone psychics are usually paid by the minute for the time they have the caller on the line. For example, one company pays .30 cents per minute of talk time. ~*~ Liaisons, Hosts, and Event Coordinators in "Virtual Worlds" (like Second Life and There) Escape the “real world!” If you haven't already heard of "virtual worlds" like Second Life and There, this may sound a bit futuristic or strange, but there really are “online worlds,” filled with businesses, clubs, universities, oceans, mountains, people -- essentially anything you'd find in the real world. Already, millions of people "live" in these worlds, where they’ve created a character, or avatar, to represent them. Some of these virtual-world inhabitants have bizarre or outlandish bodies (including tails and animal ears), though many are attractive, and some are quite entrepreneurial. (Millions of dollars are being spent in these worlds each year, producing some real-world millionaires.) As more people join, a need has grown for "in-world" event hosts, liaisons, and event greeters. (Naturally, these online helpers move about the virtual world as animated characters.) If there's a part of you that still loves playing make-believe, and you like to help people (or maybe you’re just the adventurous type!), a job in a virtual world could be perfect for you! You can find this kind of work at: http://www.there.com/opening_eventHost.html http://www.there.com/opening_greeter.html http://lindenlab.com/employment/concierge/liaisons Note: For more on how people are opening up stores and doing business in Second Life, see: -- BusinessWeek, “Second Life’s First Millionaire,” at http://tinyurl.com/ud6qp -- Entrepreneur Magazine, “Starting a Second Life Business,” at http://tinyurl.com/y9caos ~*~ Answering Questions: For everyone who's ever uttered the phrase, "If I had a dime for every time I explain this..." there are sites where people will pay you to share your expertise online. Register as an expert, and get paid to answer questions in your area of expertise. Pay is typically "per answer," and can range from $1 to $10, depending on the nature of the information requested. Resources: http://akhost.chacha.com/resources/recruiting/microsite/becomeaguide.htm http://www.justanswer.com/expert.asp http://www.knowbrainers.com/experts.php? http://guruza.com/ ~*~ Mystery Shopping If you love to shop and have a great eye for detail (and the ability to report on what you observed), this can be a fun way to supplement your income. But never pay for a job as a mystery shopper! There are plenty of legitimate mystery shopping companies who truly need skilled people to complete their “shops” and who will pay YOU -- not the other way around. You can find this kind of work at: http://www.shopnchek.com http://www.kernscheduling.com/ $ = Mystery shoppers are paid per shop, and fees are preset. For example, a shop might involve going to Dunkin Donuts and purchasing a coffee and breakfast sandwich. While there, the mystery shopper must note (mentally) whether the server was in uniform, if the restroom was clean, the dining area was clean, the service was good, the food met certain standards, etc. On completing the trip, the shopper sends the details to the company -- including proof of purchase and a report (usually on a form they provide) -- and is reimbursed for the cost of the purchase, plus $7 for the shop/report. Shopping can range from this type of arrangement, to shopping for insurance or investment bankers, using a copy center, gas station, or even dining out, going to the movies, or having an oil change. ~*~ Get Paid to Play Games We've discovered a free "get paid to play" site (Is it gambling? Opinions vary. See below!) that many find almost addictive. Moola.com gives you one penny that you may "risk" when you play a game against another user. If you win the game, you double the penny. If not, you'll get another penny to try again. Doubling a penny may not sound like much, but if you win 11 games and double your bet each time, you've banked $20.48. It’s also theoretically possible to win millions of dollars. Can you? We can't say for certain, but we did make $5.12 within 30 minutes of registering. You can make additional money by referring friends. This site makes money through advertisements, so users will have to view ads in between games. Register to make money at www.Moola.com . Click on the "Get an Invite" link. Note: This “get paid to play” site is actually a “get paid to look at ads while you play” site. That is, while you “wager” when you play games against other users, you NEVER pay any money out of pocket. You’re never asked for a credit card or other form of payment. That said, you can earn real money when you win a game. So, yes, it seems that it is gambling in theory, since there’s wagering involved, but there’s never any money out of pocket. ~*~ Socializing for Money MySpace and Facebook have already proven the power and popularity of social networking sites. Yuwie is also a free social networking site, but with a twist -- you get paid when you make posts, or refer friends, or when you or others view your profile, blogs, photo album, etc. The pay will not be much at first, but as you build out your network it can be quite substantial. With approximately 500,000 users, the site has lots of room for growth, so join early and start your own online network. Learn more about Yuwie at www.Yuwie.com. $ = Individuals make money whenever anyone views their profile at Yuwie, or looks at photos they’ve uploaded, or reads their blog. Additionally, they earn money when people they’ve referred register at Yuwie, and they also get paid when anyone visits that person’s profile, etc. It appears that the “payment per action” (a visit or view) is small -- $0.05 to $0.10. But for those who have a great social network, and are good at creating interesting content, the small amounts accumulate quickly and can result in nice checks. There are individuals already making thousands of dollars a month at Yuwie, and the company is still quite young. ~*~ Voice-Over Artist Many voice-over artists now work from home online -- all they need is a great voice, the ability to project various emotions, and good recording equipment. You can record directly to your computer's hard drive, and send your voice files electronically. Work can include commercials, narrations, or even doing the "for billing, press 2 now" recordings for corporations. Resources: http://www.opuzzvoice.com/ http://voice123.com http://www.gmvoices.com $ = According to Greatvoice.com, "Non-union jobs pay anywhere from $75-$400 a commercial depending on market size and whether your commercial runs on TV or radio." ~*~ Host your own Internet Radio Show! Podcasting is a new way of sharing audio and video that has pushed open the media doors for John and Jane Q. Public. You'll need a good voice and on-air personality, interesting stuff to talk about, a quality microphone, and appropriate software to get your show out on the Internet airwaves. Resources: http://www.thepodcastnetwork.com/ http://womeninpodcasting.com/ $ = Sponsorship income for a podcast will vary greatly according to the topic and target market and listener’s reach. Sponsor support from $250 to $5000 per program is not uncommon. ~*~ Money for Your Video Masterpieces YouTube started the video-sharing trend, and there's no end in sight. Many of these sites now have features that enable you to make money from your videos. Blip.tv has an advertising option that will pay you 50% of revenues generated by ads placed discreetly on your video, and likewise with Revver.com. ExpertVillage.com, the world’s largest how-to video site, pays an average of $300 for how-to video assignments. Associated Content offers upfront payments for some content submissions, as well as a monthly performance payment for all of your original content. www.Blip.tv www.Revver.com www.expertvillage.com www.associatedcontent.com IN U.S., 55% OF SELF-EMPLOYED WERE WORKING AT HOME LAST YEAR, SAYS BLS According to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics “snapshot” of where Americans were working on a given day, 55% of the self-employed were at home, up from 49% in 2005. (Source: The Washington Post.) (Apart from the plumbers and electricians, most of the rest were probably WiFiing at Starbucks, or out hustling up business.) Here at RRR, we expect this trend to accelerate as millions of Boomers who can’t or won’t retire begin to work solo out of home offices. (In many cases, these home offices will materialize in small towns in the South and West, as Boomers dump their homes in crowded and polluted locales -- like where I live, for instance -- for cheaper and more congenial settings. For more on this latter development, see http://tinyurl.com/55snab .) What US cities have the highest rates of home-based workers? According to a 2005 Census report, they’re -- San Francisco (6.3%) -- Portland, OR (5.3%) -- Seattle (5.1%) -- Austin (5%) -- Colorado Springs (4.9%) For BLS stats and related info, see http://tinyurl.com/5kyljg . The more you know about the industry, its companies, what hirers look for in applicants, and what the agents themselves do, the better your odds will be. A good source of info is the International Customer Management Institute, or ICMI, which produces publications, seminars, etc., on the call center industry. ICMI recently released case studies of Hilton@Home and World Travel Holdings agents, which offer insights into these two expanding hirers. For the case studies, see http://tinyurl.com/62ob6y . For more on ICMI, see http://www.icmi.com/AboutICMI.aspx . NO HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SMALL-BUSINESS EMPLOYEES IN U.S. If you plan on working for a business that has 10 employees or less, don’t expect health insurance. Less than one in five offers it -- and that “one” is getting smaller by the year. So says a recent piece in Business Week, which also notes that the percentage of these insuring small businesses has dropped almost 30% since 2005, from 46.2% to 18.6%. In a “global economy,” small businesses in the US are clearly finding it difficult to both remain competitive and assume or maintain the cost of employee health insurance, as much as many business owners would like to do so. It may only be a question of time before larger businesses follow their smaller brethren. As of 2003, a startling 1/3 of the uninsured in the US worked for large companies -- 500 employees or more. In the 1960s, by contrast, more than 80% of workers in general had employer-provided insurance. Where companies do insure, coverage is being reduced, and co-pays are increasing. Our advice? Make an extra effort to adopt healthy living habits (prevention usually being cheaper than cure), and consider taking on self-employment projects from time to time to finance minimal coverage or expand what you have now. (Better health coverage may also come from political sources, but experience suggests that moving to Scandinavia, on foot, might be faster.) For more on these trends, see http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/1028/p01s02-usec.html . For the Business Week article, see http://tinyurl.com/5u2orq . TELEWORK TO INCREASE IN THAILAND? “Telework in Thailand should soon be quite popular,” said an expert recently in the Bangkok Post. “The Fiscal Policy Office, a unit of the Finance Ministry, just announced that more than 40% of its staff would be able to work at home one day a week starting from this month until September next year.” With Bangkok’s legendary traffic (I lived there in the 1960s, with my uncle, who was in the US Foreign Service, and it was already the 8th Mechanical Wonder of the World), I’m sure this is welcome news. The article goes on to mention that, in Japan, Matsushita has 3,000 working from home, and NEC has its 20,000 folks teleworking one day per week. To Bangkok’s south, the Singapore government has launched a S$10 million fund “to help companies to implement work-life or family-friendly work practices such as telework, part time work and flexible hour options.” Will we be hearing similar news soon from Ho Chi Minh City? Let’s hope so! For the article, see http://www.bangkokpost.com/110708_Business/11Jul2008_biz34.php .
