Rounding out the offering is a nice mix of 20 hand-picked jobs and projects, and we hope you’ll find something just right for you! Enjoy, Be Well, and Good Luck! CALL CENTER CONVERGYS TO HIRE 2,000 U.S. HOME-BASED AGENTS BY END OF YEAR Convergys, which provides call center and other services through 75+ offices internationally, recently announced plans to hire 2,000 home-based agents in the U.S. by the end of 2008. Agents will be employees, with benefits, as opposed to independent contractors, who typically have none. Training is also paid. For details, see lead no. 1, below. EASY PREDICTION -- GAS PRICES WILL SPUR VIRTUAL CALL CENTER EXPANSION In January 2006, research firm IDC predicted that the number of home-based call center agents in the US would triple by 2010, from 112,000 to 330,000. The media and the agents themselves cited the obvious financial savings for the home-based individual, when gas was retailing at $2.31 a gallon. In the interim, gas prices have almost doubled, and soaring oil prices are steadily pushing up other commuter-related costs as well, from car tires to wardrobes to nail polish to haircuts. Even before these painful developments, brick and mortar call centers were well-known for high employee turnover (attrition), which can often reach over 50% annually. In contrast, turnover for home-based agents, according to a 2005 Booz Allen study, is only 10%. (Businesses hate high employee turnover rates because they’re tied to low morale, low productivity, and low customer satisfaction, and high employee-replacement costs.) Now for the “punch line”: Since we can safely assume that the compensation of brick and mortar agents has not kept pace with rising commuter costs, what will these costs do to the turnover rate of conventional call centers? You guessed it. Conversely, rising commuting costs may well reduce the turnover rate of home-based agents even further, as well as boost their already-superior productivity (25% better than brick-and-mortar agents). And finally, rising commuting costs reduce the physical recruiting perimeter of conventional call centers, even while they make the “virtual” labor pool -- which is already oceanic -- larger. Result? An accelerated adoption of the “homeshoring” model in the call center industry. HOW TO MAKE MONEY CRAFTING -- INTERVIEW WITH CARRIE LEE Last week I introduced RatRaceRebellion.com’s newest expert, Carrie Lee, who covers “How to Make Money Crafting from Home,” and sells her own clothing line and other products at CLeeDesigns. (DISCOUNT ALERT -- Carrie Lee is offering free shipping to Bulletin readers. For details, see links following the interview.) Carrie Lee has been sewing, knitting, embroidering and doing other crafts since she was a girl, and shared some of her thoughts and tips on crafting when we caught up with her in a recent email interview. RRR: How did you get into crafting? CARRIE LEE: Some of my earliest memories are times spent with my grandmother. I remember Grammy sitting me on her bed with a threaded needle, a piece of scrap material and a box of buttons. I would sew buttons all over the fabric until the thread ran out and she would thread it again. I was having fun, but of course now I know it was a way to keep me occupied while she worked on her sewing. I can remember my great-aunt giving me a threaded needle, an old pair of stockings on a darning egg and sewing up holes for her (again to keep me busy!). So I've always had that in my life. I learned to crochet while in elementary school, knitting was soon after. I sewed my first top when I was in the 6th grade on an old Singer sewing machine that had been my great-grandmother's -- it was the old treadle machine that had been converted to electric and only sewed a straight stitch. In middle school I took a sewing class and my parents bought my first sewing machine. I started with embroidery, needlepoint and such in elementary school as well, and just progressed further as I aged and trends changed. I ended up crafting to either make money or just get reimbursed for supplies, because I loved to craft and couldn't always afford to do something. When you talk about hand-painted needlepoint canvases starting at $65, then at least $50 for the wool to stitch it -- well, at the time I couldn't afford that. I could stitch pieces for shops or designers and still get to do what I loved without having to pay for the supplies. I also knitted and crocheted items for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society's “Baby's First Seabag” program. I could pick up yarn to make afghans and sweater sets, make them, and return the finished items without laying out any money. From there it just started to expand and I got into model stitching, designing and so forth. As with anything, the more you do an activity the better you get. Over the years I've learned a lot about quite a few crafts. I tend to go in cycles a bit. You get tired of needlepoint after 8-10 years and move to more sewing or knitting and so on. So, it is nice to do several different crafts. I've always got something to work on no matter what mood I'm in at the time. Right now, I've got some alpaca I'm spinning into yarn; a shirt I'm sewing for my husband; a couple of bags I'm sewing to list in my Etsy shop; and I’m knitting socks and a sweater. Maybe I'm a bit ADD when it comes to crafting! LOL I've always loved crafting, and being able to make money at it is the icing on the cake. RRR: What kind of crafting have you found most profitable? Most enjoyable? CARRIE LEE: Well, sewing is faster, so your return is a bit better on selling those items. I can cut and sew a tote bag in about 2 hours or so. It takes a lot longer to knit a sweater and people don't want to pay what you really should charge taking into account your work time. Anything that is fast is better because you can make more to sell. Obviously, you can charge a large amount for something like a wedding gown and recoup your time. But that is very limited in who may buy it. Look for something that has a broad range of appeal -- something most anyone could use. “Most enjoyable” kind of depends on my mood. I love to just sit and spin; it's very "meditative" and you really relax and forget about things while you spin yarn. It's also a very tactile activity for me -- I love to feel the fiber, the material when sewing, the yarn when knitting, and so forth. I had a customer in Alabama who hired me to make her custom graduation dress. She was thrilled with it when she got it, and that was so nice to hear. It made all the time put into that dress worth it. It is nice to hear back from someone when they get an item and they tell you how much they love it. RRR: Give us your top three tips for people who are considering having a home-based crafting business. CARRIE LEE: Be patient! It takes time to establish yourself and get consistent sales, and it takes time to hone your skills. Enjoy what you are doing. Nothing is worse than slogging through something and hating every minute of it. Try something new. You may find something you enjoy more or you may "stretch" your skills a bit trying something new. RRR: What kinds of crafting skills and products do you feel will be in highest demand for the foreseeable future? CARRIE LEE: Sewing will never go out of style. You can always make money with it whether it is doing alterations or making items from scratch. Children's clothing will always be good too. There will always be babies and kids! I've also seen a rise in scrapbook "blanks" -- you put together a scrapbook with decorations on the pages and empty space for journaling and pictures. People don't always have time to craft, so finding a short cut for them is always good. You can tell a lot about current trends by checking out crafting magazines and watching what sells on sites like eBay and Etsy. ## For more on Carrie Lee, see: -- Her Expert’s page at RatRaceRebellion.com: http://www.ratracerebellion.com/EC_crafting.html -- CLee Designs, her line of products at Etsy, at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=43085 . IN UK, SOME COMMUTERS MAY SOON WORK FROM “TELE-HUBS” Commuters in Birmingham can look forward to ditching their commute and working from local “tele-hubs,” if regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM) has its way. “As a nation we have rested on our laurels and refused to see that we need to make big changes. Some of it will hurt. But the whole work dynamic has got to change,” said Prof. Peter Braithwaite, an expert on sustainability quoted in an article on the tele-hubs in the Birmingham Post. The article also quotes AWM’s Dr. Simon Slater: “If we can convince people’s HR departments to work more flexibly there is a huge gain in productivity and a huge reduction in carbon.” In other bulletin editions, we’ve reported on similar developments. So for readers who have been with us awhile, here’s a quiz: What do you get when you add a café to a tele-hub? Answer: A “Coworking Center”! (For readers just joining us, you can find a good example of a coworking center in the US at http://www.officenomads.com/ . For more on coworking centers, see the “News” page there, as well as the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coworking.) The Birmingham Post article is at http://tinyurl.com/47tq4e . CHINA PASSES U.S. AS TOP POLLUTER (THOUGH AMERICANS STILL LEAD PER CAPITA) China now pumps out 14% more carbon dioxide per year than the US, according to TheDailyGreen.com, citing a report from the Netherlands. But -- for the time being -- the US still leads per capita: “It takes almost four Chinese people (and more than 10 Indians) to equal the pollution of a single American.” The Big Question, however, is this: Given the projected growth in China’s and India’s middle classes, and continuing US levels of consumerism -- not to mention ecological issues arising from population growth globally, and global warming trends already in motion -- how do we avoid overburdening the planet? Well, working from home internationally would be a good offset on the car side, and anecdotal evidence suggests that home-based work also reduces “ineedmoreitis” generally. Send me your thoughts at mhaaren@ratracerebellion.com, and I’ll share them here. For the Daily Green article, go to http://tinyurl.com/5zchf9 . RRR ON ABC NEWS AND IN “WORKWISE” COLUMN; THANK YOU FOR WONDERFUL EMAILS ABOUT FINDING WORK AND FOR YOUR COMPLIMENTS ABC News gave us some really nice coverage today, at http://tinyurl.com/53kwfy (Thank you, Michelle Goodman and ABC!), and Dr. Mildred Culp wrote about us this week in her syndicated Workwise column, which appears in the Hartford Courant and many other publications. (Thank you, Dr. Culp! The article, resplendent with pic of Chris, is online at http://tinyurl.com/3ucokj.) As great as it is to see our “name up in lights” in these wonderful places, it’s even more gratifying to receive emails from folks sharing their happiness at finding home-based work, and to be thanked in person at our workshops. ("This is by far one of the best sites for work at home, freelancing, you guys did an excellent job, I just wanted to say thank you, I have found so many jobs from this site it is unbelievable," S.V. recently wrote us. You’re very welcome, S.V.!) Chris and I started training people for virtual careers in 1999, and have been publishing the bulletin each week since 2004. Every day, we upload new resources (at no charge) to RRR.com, and do our best to stay abreast of the many emails and phone calls we receive about home-based work from around the world. (We even get emails in languages we, alas, don’t speak.) With heavy travel commitments, too (next week, as mentioned below, we’ll be at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Co., for our home-based-job-finding workshop), we get a little pooped sometimes, which is simply to say how very much we appreciate and are buoyed up by the wonderful compliments and successes that people share with us. We look forward to hearing from you virtually and meeting you in person on our travels, and continuing to do our best to help you find fulfilling work at home. OUR WORK AT HOME SEMINAR AT PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, COLO., USA, NEXT WEEK If you live in or near Colorado Springs, Colo., Chris and I will be giving our 6-hour Home-Based Career Development Program™ (at no charge; we are paid by the base) at Peterson AFB on June 25, from 8:30AM to 3:30PM. The workshop, which shows you how to find legitimate home-based jobs and projects online, spot scams, optimize your resume for telework, and much more, is open to servicemembers, spouses, retirees, DoD contractors, and others in the military community. FROM THE R3 MAILBAG -- QUESTIONS ABOUT WORKING FROM HOME, AND OTHER RAT RACE TOPICS DEAR R3: I have a home-based business and would like to get mentioned on local radio, but I don’t know how to make it happen. Do you have any ideas? R3: Let me quote Travis Dylan, an experienced DJ at 92.1 FM in Norfolk, Va. (http://www.cool921.com/main.html), who gives the following advice in our book for home-based freelancers, “The 2-Second Commute” http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1564147924/sr=8-2/qid=1139925650/ref=pd_bbs_2?%5Fencoding=UTF8&tag2=staffcentrix-20: The first step is to match the topic or product with the correct format, which is the music or other programming the station carries. Think about the typical listener of the stations in your market and ask yourself, "Does my service or topic target that person?" Once you've zeroed in on the right format, take the time to ensure whatever it is you're pitching is (1) compelling and (2) entertaining. Radio Hosts and Producers strive for a seamless blend of information and entertainment, so be prepared to "make the phones light up"! One of the most challenging tasks is to find the decision maker, who is usually the Program Director, Show Producer or in some cases the Host. Once you've got that information, be tenacious. Don't be disappointed if your calls aren't returned; keep trying. At the very least, try to develop some sort of dialogue so you can follow up and eventually get on the air. Once you've been granted the interview/air time always ask for an aircheck (a recorded segment of your appearance). This is vital, as you’ll use it to build your resume so that other prospective stations have an idea of just how compelling and entertaining you are. To get started, you can usually find a listing of your local radio stations in the yellow pages. (Online you can use a search engine, but for access to a national directory of stations you may have to pay a subscriber fee, and the directory may or may not be up to date, so beware.) Get the call letters and find the front desk number (avoid the request line). In most cases the front desk operator knows more than anybody else in the building! Helpful Hint: Radio is required by law to serve the community. Most stations do this by featuring a Public Affairs show in one form or another, and they tend to be the hungriest for good local guests. (Excerpt copyright 2005 Staffcentrix, LLC.
