~*~*~ THE RAT RACE REBELLION TELEWORK BULLETIN ~*~*~ Dear Reader, A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR A big shout out to our mom readers for Happy Mother’s Day, coming up this Sunday. (Please consider this bulletin a virtual lush bouquet of fragrant roses -- yes, I cut them myself! -- wafting you away, far away, from every care…) But speaking of care, and treasuring the important people in your life, how about Editor’s Day? I like that idea, too. Mom’s Day, Dad’s Day -- Editor’s Day! Send your roses to mhaaren@staffcentrix.com. (BTW, Jacquie Lawson has pretty online cards, animated, with flowers, cats, dogs. For Mothers or Editors, or even spouses. Chris and I send Jacquie’s cards. Just a few bucks a year; cheaper and greener too than paper cards. To see, go to http://www.jacquielawson.com. This ain’t an ad, but tell her we sent you! Maybe I’ll get a virtual dog.) As for what’s in the rest of today’s bulletin, please read on! I’ve already talked enough. Enjoy! Good Luck! Be Well! “BEST & WORST COUNTRIES TO BE A MOTHER” US-based charity Save the Children just released its annual list of best and worst countries to be a mother. Among the 10 best are the usual suspects -- Sweden (1), Denmark (5), Finland (7) -- but also two countries we don’t usually consider “Scandinavian” -- Australia (6) and New Zealand (4). The US, which has more important things to worry about than mothers (Hannah Montana’s clothes, for example), sinks from 26 to 27. (Since I’m a father, I checked their website for a corresponding list for fathers, but they don’t have one. Seems to me they should -- after all, kids have two parents -- so I sent them a polite note to ask when they planned to compile one. No answer yet.) Details at http://www.savethechildren.org/newsroom/2008/best-worst-countries-mother.html INTERVIEW WITH ARISE CALL CENTER AGENT, YOLANDA BISHOP In addition to occasional interviews with hirers of home-based workers, we also feature Q&As with folks who work from home. Today’s interviewee is Yolanda Bishop, a home-based agent for virtual call center Arise (http://www.arise.com). We caught up with Yolanda recently via email, to learn more about what she does, and how it’s working out for her. RRR: What led you to want to work from home, as opposed to in a conventional office? YOLANDA BISHOP: As a mother of three, I'm constantly on the go, picking up my kids at school, shuttling them to cheerleading, football practice and baseball or cooking dinner for my family. A firm schedule was not ideal for me. I wanted a job with a lot of flexibility and to be able to make all my children's extracurricular activities. Arise has made it easy for me to operate my customer service business from home. Arise allows me to choose when and how often I want to provide service with their flexible scheduling options that have allowed me to divide my time into increments as few as 30 minutes. Arise also provides me with access to the scheduling tools, so that I can service shift selections which can be made from home. Instead of commuting to work, I could work out of my home. Instead of dressing up, I could work in my pajamas! RRR: Many of our readers are interested in home-based agent work. Tell us a bit about the interview process you completed to get your position with Arise. YOLANDA BISHOP: The interview process takes you through three steps. The assessments are very easy to do and follow. (1) Skills Assessment: This measures your ability by taking you through three different activities: Business Reasoning - This involves your ability to process the kinds of business information you may encounter; Basic Computer Navigation - This activity gives you the opportunity to show Arise how well you can use the tools available in most common software applications; and Data Entry and Typing - This activity measures your typing speed and accuracy. (2) Job Fit Assessment: This takes you through a series of questions that helps Arise determine the best types of assignments for you based on your personality traits and common, natural behaviors. (3) Voice Assessment: The Voice Assessment gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your voice quality by providing a script and recording instructions. Arise provides a phone number that you will call to leave your recorded voice entry. RRR: In your professional or employment background, what experience has served you best as a call center agent? YOLANDA BISHOP: I have strong communication skills, to understand customer needs and provide exceptional results, and a track record of successfully dealing with difficult personalities to resolve dissatisfaction. I'm proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and am able to operate all major office equipment. I enjoy collaboration with colleagues, clients and customers, as well as completing tasks independently. I'm eager to motivate and inspire others to deliver their best, and skilled in maintaining order amidst chaos and ever-changing challenges. Finally, I can seamlessly multi-task long and short-term priorities to generate desired results. RRR: Describe a typical day for you as an Arise agent. YOLANDA BISHOP: 8:00 AM - School Time 8:45 AM - Ready for Work 9:00 AM - 10:30 Morning Shift 11:00 AM - Mall Time 2:00 PM - Cleaning up 3:00 PM - "We're Home" 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Busy Kids 5:30 PM - Family Time 8:00 PM - Bedtime 9:00 PM - Night Shift 10:30 PM - Goodnight! I take my kids to school and when I return I enjoy my time. At 9 AM-10:30 AM I log on to my computer and assist with a variety of issues from incoming callers. At 11:00 I log out of the computer system and call my friend to confirm our lunch plans. We meet for lunch at a local restaurant and then hit the malls for a couple hours of shopping before heading home. I have just enough time to pick up around the house and look through the daily mail before I go pick up the children from school. I prepare each of my kids a snack, talk about their school day, review their homework assignments, and then help them get ready for their afternoon activities. I drop my 13-year-old daughter at cheerleading practice and then I head over to the football field to take my 15-year-old to football practice and then take my 8-year-old to the park to play for a while and meet up with a couple other neighborhood moms. Lessons and practice are over and I return home with the kids to prepare dinner. Greg returns from work at about 5:30 PM. The family sits down for dinner to enjoy some time together. Dishes, homework and more family time follow. Greg pitches in with the kids, making sure baths are taken and everything is ready for the next school day. I take this time to clean up my work area and prepare for another short work shift before the night ends. I log back into Arise for a short one-hour shift. Sometimes I have a caller who has a question that I'm just not certain how to answer, so I instant chat one of the on-staff Team Leaders for assistance. My question is quickly answered and I successfully complete the call. In between calls, I check the schedule and choose to sign up for some extra hours for the upcoming weekend. At 9:58 PM I complete my last call, check my stats one more time, and I log out for the night. At 10:30 PM it's lights out. RRR: What's the strangest, oddest, or most interesting call you've ever had? YOLANDA BISHOP: My most interesting call was just recently when a customer called to purchase the Amelia Earhart DVD. I told her I would be happy to help her. While I was looking up the availability of her item, I asked her for her last name and she said Gere. When I told her about the product, she said that she was looking for this DVD as Mr. Richard Gere, the actor, needed this to study some films on Amelia Earhart's life. Mrs.Gere said that her husband will be shooting a movie on Amelia Earhart in New York. When we were through discussing the product she was really happy with the information I provided for her. I told her all of us from PBS said "Hello and good luck in his upcoming movie!" RRR: How do you handle or avoid the feelings of isolation that can sometimes affect home-based workers? YOLANDA BISHOP: I have met the most wonderful staff and agents working for Arise. I love meeting and talking to my customers throughout the day. My customers are from all over the world, which makes my job exciting. While I am providing customer service to my customers I get to know them better each and every day. It is an amazing job to be able to work from home and still meet people. I have to admit I have never felt isolation from being a home-based worker. Arise makes it professional, educational and entertaining! ### CHRIS TO GIVE FREE “HOME-BASED JOBS WORKSHOP” AT VANDENBERG AFB MAY 14 (Only Six Seats Left -- “Act Now While Supplies Last!”) Our very own Christine Durst (who is also an Air Force Mom) will be delivering our popular Home-Based Career & Telework Jobs Development Program™ at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on May 14. The six-hour program (which is paid for by the base) is free to military spouses, servicemembers, retirees, and other DEERS / military ID cardholders. To grab your spot, call Linda Crowder at the base’s Airman & Family Readiness Center, at 805-606-0039. AND SPEAKING OF U.S. MILITARY SPOUSES… MAY 9 IS MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY As readers who’ve been with us awhile know, Chris and I have a lot of personal and family connections to the military, and we’ve been helping military spouses and other military folks develop portable careers and find home-based jobs for some time. So we’d be awfully remiss (not to say ashamed) if we didn’t mention that May 9 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Tomorrow, then, if you see, know of, or otherwise perceive a military spouse within communicating distance (in other words, anywhere), tell them how much you appreciate their service, their devotion, their commitment, and their sacrifice. The US military family has been called upon to do an awful lot for an awful long time now, and one day per year from us -- for the hundreds of days, and sometimes so much more, that they’ve given, or lost, on our behalf -- doesn’t seem like too long a deployment, does it. Chris and I salute you, and thank you, on your Day. ARE YOU A WRITER? BEWARE THE UNINTENDED PUN, AND OTHER BLOOPERS I spent seven “Bohemian” years as a fiction writer in Paris (oh yes, I have many stories for my future grandchildren -- and quite a few they’ll never hear!), and over the years I became friends with a small group of writers around the city. Like writers elsewhere, we used to pass our short story and novel manuscripts around for critiques. According to my grandmother, who knew a wretch when she saw one (she was quite dignified -- daughter of a Marine Corps Commandant -- and used to refer to anyone she didn’t like as, “that creature”), I have a wretched love of puns, which, for better or worse, makes me sensitive to their appearance in prose. One of my Paris writer friends, who punned unintentionally in almost every paragraph he wrote, would wince and rant when I handed him back his manuscripts, festooned with red ink. But how could I let them go by? They’re distracting, and they make you laugh when the writer has other intentions. Here are a few of my favorites, taken from years of indiscriminate reading. -- “Many Americans are becoming vegetarians, and have begun to eschew meat.” -- “Fabio and Doris embraced beneath the tree, and when their lips finally met, after months of denial and sweet, aching hunger, Doris was rooted to the spot.” -- “The seamstress, though poor, was popular with the women in the neighborhood, who found her sense of humor attractive and somehow comforting. ‘I love the way Helen makes us laugh,’ said Betty. ‘She’s a stitch.’” Typesetting errors at the printer’s, though less likely now in the digital age, have long been another source of concern. Consider the following line of poetry, which the poet sent in manuscript: -- “Having fought his battle, he lay under the stars all night.” The printer, however, apparently drew upon a different range of experience: -- “Having fought his bottle, he lay under the stairs all night.” What to do? Well, pay attention, of course, but also let your mind drift a bit as you proof your sentences. This way, the connotations will echo around the words as you read, and you’ll be more likely to hear the misfits (or fits of the giggles) as you polish your way toward perfection. Otherwise, you may end up like my sister and me when we were walking down the Champs-Elysees, a place where Parisians are more likely to be bilingual. She made some offhand observation about Paris (I don’t remember what) that made me caution her about being overheard. “Oh!” she said. “Is that a fas paux?” “Kinda,” I replied. “But it’ll be a worse one if you step in that poodle doo.” FRUGAL AND SIMPLE LIVING Et voila, mes friends, les freebies and les cheapies pour cette semaine. She commutes and works, I commute and work. It’s terrible. We never see our two teenagers, they’re either out with friends, or in their rooms. I have no idea what they’re doing. On the professional side, my wife is a partner in a prestigious accounting firm, and I’m a partner in a growing corporate law firm. We just bought a beautiful new 50,000 square foot house, and we have a ski cottage and a beach house. We have a nice life. She loves her Range Rover (we got the teleconferencing package to keep in touch), and I love my Lotus and my MDX. We go out for a nice French meal when we can, and lately we’ve become more serious about our wine collection, and have hired a wine advisor to help us with our investments. We’ve also taken a position in the work of a contemporary artist my wife met in Basel last year, whose work is becoming very much in demand among serious collectors. (If I told you his name, you’d no doubt recognize him.) When I began this email, I wanted to write you about our family life, but now that I’ve taken a moment to sit back and really reflect on it, I think it’s actually not all that bad. In fact, I think it’s quite good. Does it really matter so much that we don’t know each other anymore? R3: In your case, probably not.
